    The Big Picture

    Capital File cover

In the Summer issue of Capital File Magazine, Carter urges Americans to take “baby steps” toward a more eco-friendly environment, and  makes no apologies for his laid back “do what you can” approach to conserving energy. “I get frustrated when I see people getting upset with others because they don’t do everything eco-friendly,” he tells Capital File’s Cheryl Woodcock. Although he admits that his mantra is “not breakthrough stuff,” it is his simple, repetitive approach to conserving energy that has made Carter so popular. He understands that change doesn’t come easily, and instead creates manageable steps that are ideal for time-strapped people.

Carter teamed with the nonprofit Environmental Media Association to “green” their new Los Angeles office.  To achieve a more eco-friendly space, Carter used bamboo flooring, organic cotton covered chairs, low-VOC non-toxic paint, and bamboo shag rugs. “You can get fantastic looking design and still be eco-conscious” says the Carter Can and Red Hot and Green star.

A Regular Guy Who’s Red Hot and Green

Pop Rock Candy Mountain recently chatted with Carter about his new HGTV show “Red Hot and Green,” his work on behalf of children’s charities, and his heartthrob status. But Carter scoffed at the notion of being a model; he’d rather focus on his good work, not his good looks.

“Red Hot and Green” premieres in June, and focuses on “design that centers around using eco- friendly products in the home,” Carter said. “Green is huge now, but we don’t want people to feel pressured or made to feel guilty about it so we are hoping to win them over with the designs.”

In addition to his new show, Carter will continue hosting “Carter Can” on HGTV and running his non-profit children’s organization “Carter’ s Kids,” as well as various other children’s charities.  He started “Carter’s Kids” to encourage children to engage more in outdoor activities, instead of sitting in the house playing video games. “We get the kids involved in building community parks and playgrounds and in taking care of them after they are completed, “he said. “It’s about activity but it’s also about community and building self- esteem.”

Carter would rather use his celebrity to be a mentor and role model for kids, and laughed off the notion that he is anything other than a regular guy. “I’m not a model. Sometimes, I’m just on a boat and then a guy takes my picture…[but] I pick up dog poop like everyone else does."

    Helping Michigan Go Green

In a recent interview for BuyMichiganNow.com, Carter Oosterhouse says growing up in Michigan helped shape the person he is today.  His solid work ethic, Midwestern values, and love of the outdoors are all from having grown up in Traverse City, Michigan.  In fact, he’s obsessed with his home state and all it has to offer, and is even going to shoot some episodes of “Carter Can” in Traverse City this summer. “There is nothing like a sunny summer afternoon on the water. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.”

Not only is Michigan beautiful, it’s also the fourth biggest wine producing state in the U.S., and Carter believes this can be used to the state’s advantage.  “Let’s capitalize on this opportunity,” he says. “Michigan is already a huge tourist destination but we might have a 2% decline in tourism this year. That's something we can collectively change.”

As a “green” enthusiast, Carter believes that Michigan must be used to its full potential. The region is full of wind power, hydro - power, and bio-fuels that need to be taken advantage of. Michigan is also full of fertile land, and “Farmer’s markets are a great way to keep the dollar close to home.” Frequenting local businesses are a good way to bring in more local jobs and help small businesses grow. “We need to accelerate our thinking and understanding in the ‘green’ space. The Midwest has beautiful open land and Michigan has some of the best.”

Carter finished the interview with a shout out to his Michigan fans: “Thanks for watching the shows and keeping me busy and even though the economy may be down all we need to do is pick it back up!”

Carter Talks how to go Green

LA-based Carter Oosterhouse recently spoke with Kathy Price-Robinson of the LA Times about going green and his shows on HGTV. Aside from "Carter Can," and hosting HGTV’s "Green Home Giveaway" on April 22, Carter has a new design show titled "Red, Hot, and Green" which will premiere in June '08.

Growing up in Michigan, Carter was introduced to health and nutrition at an early age by his parents. This eventually led to environmental consciousness. "My parents were "green" before it was the thing to do or even called that," comments Carter about his parents’ people and earth-friendly lifestyle. As an adult, Carter embraces environmental friendliness in his profession and in his life. At home, Carter weatherproofs and uses low volatile organic compound (VOC—aka earth friendly) paints. He also uses indigenous plants in his yard.

When asked why many people are hesitant to be more environmentally friendly, Carter believes that this is due to the newness of green living and the fact that many people still don’t really understand the whole concept or the idea that one can transition into the eco-lifestyle. Carter encourages homeowners on "Carter Can" to go green one step at a time. Carter suggests that the easiest way is for them "to seal up their home with weather stripping, use no or low VOC paints . . . Also, they can save on energy costs simply by using CFL’s and Energy Star appliances." Such energy saving advice is something that many homeowners can understand and adapt easily.

Finally, Carter mentions that his new HGTV show "Red, Hot & Green" features amazing "design that people will be attracted to, but green materials will be the foundation of our renovation. Our whole idea is not to scare people away, but show them that you don’t have to sacrifice beautiful design when using green products." Perhaps "Red, Hot & Green" will make it easier and more entertaining for people to go green one show at a time.

    "Green" is not a color!

HGTV has gone totally green in their first ever "Green Home Giveaway." From the Yukon hybrid parked in front of the house to the throw pillows for decoration, HGTV has built their first totally eco-friendly home using sustainable materials and energy saving water and lighting systems. The show will air on March 23rd, 8 pm, PT. HGTV has always been at the forefront of the eco-movement, but this house is the "first of its kind … equipped with all the latest environmentally friendly additions," according to an article local NBC affiliate WSAV in Savannah, GA. HGTV let cameras inside the HGTV Green Home at Tradition Hilton Head off I-95 in Hardeeville, Savannah, GA in the beginning of March.

From the outside to the inside, this eco-friendly home is not only good for the environment with its high-end earth friendly features, but it is also good for the lucky homeowners who will get to live there. Health conscious homeowners will enjoy a healthy and green abode. Carter and other HGTV designers have inspired and influenced millions of viewers with their green lifestyle choice. Carter encourages homeowners to use soy-based materials because the product does not have toxic elements that can be inhaled. Soy-based paint is a better and healthier alternative to chemical-based paint products. Perhaps not too many people know about soy-based materials, but if Carter says it you can bet that "soy-based" will become the next eco-catch phrase.

L.A. DJ Gets a Room Makeover

It’s Carter to the rescue when Los Angeles based R & B DJ Diana Steele of V100Music.com needed help renovating a multi-purpose room that she used as an office and her sons used as a playroom and entertainment center. Diana actually connected with “Carter Can” by answering an ad on Craigslist. Carter and his crew spent two days with Diana renovating the space and the reveal was an emotional experience for Diana. “The room is beautiful and couldn't have fit my style better,” comments Diana.

The fun thing about “Carter Can” is that homeowners participate in the building. After spending a day with Carter, Diana has become quite the handy woman. “Since the show I have purchased my own nail gun, which was a fun part of doing the show,” says Diana.

One side note: There is definitely a “DJ connection” in “Carter Can” because Carter and his crew also redesigned the bedroom of a young boy whose mother, Lily (who passed away from cancer), Diana worked with at KKBT "The Beat” some years back. Diana is also a good friend of Lily’s sister Joann Piloto, a DJ at “Power 106” in Los Angeles. It’s great that Carter and his crew can help people in such a way and even more wonderful when the connection between the guests is as close as this.

The “Carter Can” episode airs February 2, 2008 11:30 am ET/PT on HGTV.

Carter Trade his Hammer for a Guitar? ...Oh Yeah!

There are a growing number of people living out their rock and roll dreams by going to Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp, according to an article from USA Today. Everyone's got the rock star bug - including America's favorite handyman. As a young kid, Carter heard a song from the band Quiet Riot and he was hooked. The song made quite an impression on him. "The lyric said, 'Love's a bitch,' but I thought it was 'Love's a fish.' Whatever. I was hooked," Carter said.

When asked if he'd trade his talent for building to become a rock and roll star, Oosterhouse laughs and says, "I would take it in a heartbeat."

It would be interesting to see Carter with an electric guitar strapped to him instead of a tool belt. Unfortunately, Carter admits that he "wasn't any good" with a guitar. Today, Carter satisfies his thirst for the rock star life by playing Guitar Hero III, a video game where the player with a guitar controller must strum in synch to the music to score points and retain their performance level. Carter plays this with his girlfriend until 2 a.m. It's a good thing that Carter chose the hammer instead of a guitar as a young lad. If not millions of viewers would be deprived of his innovative green solutions in his show Carter Can. Then again, how many would want to see Carter playing Guitar Hero III in the wee hours?
